A historic town on an island in the Gambia River — where colonial history and local identity converge in the heart of The Gambia.
Janjanbureh, formerly known as Georgetown, is a historic town located on an island in the Gambia River, in the interior of The Gambia. The town was founded in the early 19th century by the British, during a period when they were establishing control over the interior following the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.
It was named "Georgetown" in honor of King George III. During the colonial period, it served several key roles: an administrative center in the interior, a strategic control point along the river, and a settlement area for freed Africans.
After The Gambia gained independence, the town was renamed Janjanbureh, reflecting its local identity and marking a new chapter in its long history.
